I thought, as I am on holiday I would just post a few tantalising teasers that will wet your appetite, then when I get home I can write a more detailed description, there's just so many wonderous things to write about here in Tuscany I can't possibley keep them all to myself for a whole week!
Before going out for our first supper we headed to the supermarket to gather some supplies, if first impressions are anything to go by I was expecting to walk into isles of pre - packed uninviting ( usually battered) fruit and veg with chilled cabinets filled with cardboard tasting ready meals - similar as to what you'd expect to pick up at your local spar ( this store was no bigger). How wrong was I - there were stacks of bursting strawberries and brilliantly red cherries, trays of baby courgettes with the flowers still attached ( perfect for stuffing with a soft cheese ), huge bundles of freshly cut asparagus, all this was just what I saw on first glance - I had hardly set my foot through the door.
For the first time in a long time it was nice to see R as eager and excited as a child in a sweet shop as me. We quicky separated to go to which ever food stuff was hypnotically drawing us in . For R at first it was the delicate slices of Parma ham and bresola that was before he saw for him what truely was a gift from god - A 1 kilo T - bone steak, I only just caught him out of the corner of my eye, waving at me and eyes bursting with excitement trying to get my attention but I was to busy having my own fantasy gazing at the huge olives stuffed with I'm not quite sure but I didn't care, there were trays if marinated octopus that looked so delectable even I could have happily sunk my teeth into a giant tentacle. Ricotta cheese was in abundance as well as the creamy mozzarella- sitting in it's slightly salted pool of water while it waited to be torn and ooze out it's dreamy insides.
Worried that we were drawing attention to ourselves, sporadically moving from one side of the shop to the other and just standing staring in ore at the sheer quality of the produce, I snapped out of my half conscious state and began trying to gather the necessities whilst at the same time stopping R from purchasing half a cow.
The worrying thing is this was just a small average supplied supermarket, who knows what's going to happen to us when we visit the small artisan delicatessens of Florence and Siena- I fear we may just melt away in thier doorsteps.
Aplogies for the lack of pictures - I wasn't quite courageous enough to whip out my camera, I didnt think it would help me in trying to fit in with the locals.
I will upload some when I can learn to take pictures in a inconspicuous way!
Ciao for now
